Catherine Nuce "Katie" Avirett, of Brevard and St. Petersburg, Fla., died peacefully on Sept. 3, 2017, after a four-year battle with thyroid cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Capt. Thomas Avirett; daughter, Susie Fischer McGarry (Mark); sons, David Fischer Jr. and Jimi Fischer (Tina); step-daughters, Jamie George (Ed), Renee Avirett (Tom Jr. ) and Chris Glassey (Jimmie); and "Gran" to 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She spent the last 29 summers in the Toxaway/ Brevard area of North Carolina. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, gardening, tennis (Toxaway Club) and golf. She was a champion bridge player and was tough to beat at any card game.

She volunteered her time and skills to many organizations over the years. Her beautiful smile will be missed.

There will be a private memorial.

National Cremation Society is serving the family.
