Missing The Point

Charles Brendle’s letter, printed in your Sept. 21 edition, where he compares the preservation of Auschwitz to the preservation of Civil War memorials, misses the point.

The Auschwitz memorial does not pretend to commemorate the ingenuity of German engineers who mechanized the killing of Jews, Gypsies and others; it preserves the horror of that tool. Statues of confederate generals honor the supposed accomplishments of the general; they do not reflect the horror of slavery.
