Local Rock Climbers Have A Narrow Escape

It was a close call for Caleb Spradlin and his friend Barrett Pauer on Sept. 27. The pair were climbing the "Shortest Straw," a 15-pitch climb on El Capitan in California's Yosemite National Park when what he described as an "apartment building sized rock" broke loose about 100 feet to the right of them. One climber from Wales died in the rockslide, and several more were injured.

Spradlin, a Brevard resident and UNC-Asheville student, and Pauer are both on an extended climbing trip, hitting some of the best climbing spots in the western part of the country. As well as Yosemite, they have...
