A man was shot Thursday night in Brevard, leading to one arrest.

Dekarlos R. James, 26, was arrested Friday for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and he has been placed in the county jail under a $100,000 bond.

"We got the 911 call around 10:45 p.m.," said Brevard Police Chief Phil Harris. "The shooting took place in the Whitmire Street and Burrell Mountain Road area."

Harris said residents of the area claimed to have heard four to 10 gunshots, and someone called 911.

"Several officers were at the scene, and as they headed that way, one officer saw a vehicle speeding away and thought it might be connected," Harris said. "He turned and pulled the car over, got it to stop and the driver said he was trying to get his friend to the hospital because he had been shot."

The victim, 27-year-old Brevard resident Julian C. Erwin, was shot in the right, lower abdomen and was transported to Transylvania Regional Hospital.

"The injury is serious but not life-threatening," said Harris. "We've spoken to people in the area, and we've narrowed down the people involved in this, and, so far, we've decided it's between two homes - the victim living in one and the suspect living in the other."

According to Harris, detectives are investigating what caused the incident, and the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) is assisting in the investigation.
