Karon Goldsmith, director of nursing at College Walk Senior Living, has been recognized by long-term resident Grace Roy for her dedication and service by establishing a scholarship for College Walk employees in Goldsmith's name.

The scholarship began May 2017 and provides financial assistance for College Walk employees enrolled in the Blue Ridge Community College nursing program. Currently, there are two employees who are eligible to benefit from the scholarship, which is managed by Blue Ridge Community College Foundation. Eligibility requirements are the recipient must be an employee of College Walk and have a 2.5 GPA in the nursing program.

Roy, a 15-year resident currently residing in the assisted living community, says that she observed ho Goldsmith mentored and encouraged her staff to further their education. As an educator herself and a past Brevard College faculty member, Roy felt that it was important to recognize Goldsmith for inspiring future nurses.

Goldsmith entered the nursing field at the age of 16, enrolling in the Fletcher Hospital and subsequently Chapel Hill program of nursing. Throughout her career she has had a range of responsibilities and positions, including director of nursing of hospitals and nursing homes, family nurse practitioner, nursing home administrator and a state and federal surveyor.

Goldsmith joined College Walk in 2013 as the director of nursing, when she returned to her hometown of Brevard to care for her late mother.

Upon learning Roy's plans with the scholarship, Goldsmith said, "I am so humbled and grateful. Grace's generosity means that we can do more than just be role models. We can participate in providing the financial assistance to move their career in health care forward."
