Use Of Opioids Doubled In Past 25 Years

For much of this country’s history, opioid abuse had not been much of a problem. In the past last 25 years, however, opioid use has doubled in the United States, killing more people than automobile or gun-related accidents.

Jim Hardy, coordinator of the addiction series being sponsored by the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County and the Transylvania County NAACP, said during the third presentation that focused on opioid abuse that prior to the 1980s, opioids were prescribed only to those dying of cancer and only then under very tightly controlled conditions.
