Humiliation Is Only Destructive

During a recent trip to Berlin, I went to a permanent exhibit entitled “The Topology of Terror” where the Nazi era is examined. One image stands out. After the Nazis assumed power in 1933, anti-Nazi establishment figures were subjected to various forms of humiliation. In the picture I particularly recall, a professor was tied onto a donkey, a placard with shaming language was tied around his neck, and he was paraded through the streets.

Dehumanizing those who disagree with us did not, and will not, end well. Humiliation is not the way to deal with people with whom we disagree. Can we...
