Loneliness: The Ultimate Poverty

November 30, 2017

I wanted to do community service during the Thanksgiving holiday season because of the loving support I have been given by folks this year. My wishes came true as a friend in my church asked me to accompany her in delivering Meals on Wheels.

What an experience! What I came to see was the isolation and loneliness of the elderly. Some of the meal recipients have no other social contact than the delivery of a meal.

This situation reminds me of the outlook of my teenage students in Connecticut. I used to give them a writing prompt: “Loneliness is the ultimate poverty.”

My students balked at my sentiment.

“No, Mrs. Benway, not having money is the ultimate poverty.”

To which I replied, “You haven’t lived long enough.”

At this holiday time of year, let’s seek out our lonely elders.
