Brevard First United Methodist Church will present Corey Powell of Asheville, who will perform a 40-minute program of Christmas music on the church's pipe organ on Friday, Dec. 8, at 12:25 p.m. Sponsored by the Beulah McMinn Zachary Organ Foundation at the Church, the program is free and open to the public.

The recital is the second in a series of three Christmas organ recitals at the church. The third and final recital will feature Kyle Ritter of Asheville on Friday, Dec. 15, at 12:25 p.m.

Powell is organist and music associate at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville. He holds the Master of Music in organ performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music where he was a student of Hans Davidsson. As a church musician, Powell has held positions in Florida, Alabama, New York, Virginia and North Carolina.

Powell will play Grand Fantasia on "Joy to the World," arranged by Marc Cheban; "Three Carols" arranged by Diane Bish; "Noël Étranger" by Louis-Claude Daquin; "Pastorale" and "Song of Peace" by Craig Phillips. The program will end with Gerald Near's setting of "Carillon on a Ukranian Bell Carol."

The sanctary organ is a 28-rank pipe organ built by the Schantz Organ Company in 1958. The organ has been upgraded and enhanced throughout the years. Most recently in 2014, the organ was revoiced by organ builder Daniel Angerstein of Hendersonville. For organ recitals, the console is pulled out so that the audience can see the performer play the instrument.

The Beulah McMinn Zachary Organ Foundation maintains the two pipe organs used at FUMC, as well as the Robinson harpsicord. The foundation also sponsors recitals and concerts for the benefit of the church and the community.

The church is located at 325 N. Broad St. in Brevard. Parking is available in the church parking lot on Caldwell Street behind Pad Tai. Concert attendees are asked not to park in the College Plaza parking lot.
