Brevard College sophomore and well-beloved student Rakeem Sweezy passed away last week, according to a press release from the college.

From Shelby, N.C., he was known to most of the community as "Sweezy" and others called him "Dimples" because of his ever-present smile.

"Sweezy was known and loved by many of you, and this is, of course, a very painful time for our campus community," said Dee Dasburg, who is the associate dean of students and coordinator of counseling services, writing in an email to students.

A vigil was held on campus Saturday evening and counseling sessions continue for students, faculty and staff.

David Joyce, Brevard College President asked the community to join in keeping Sweezy's family in their thoughts and prayers.

"He was a joyful person who brought light in any room he entered," said Lynne Joyce, David's wife.

The cause of Sweezy's death is yet unknown pending results of an upcoming autopsy.

A celebration of Sweezy's life at Brevard College is being planned in the spring to be held on campus when students return from winter break.
