Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church, located at 249 East Main Street, in Brevard, will offer its annual Christmas Lovefeast on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 4 p.m. In the style of the Moravian Lovefeast, the service includes Moravian buns, cider and Moravian beeswax candles during the candle lighting portion of the service.

The Chancel Choir will provide Advent and Christmas music, which will include "Star Carol" and "Nativity Carol" by John Rutter, "And the Glory of the Lord" from Handel's Messiah, a Celtic style setting of "Silent Night," "Away in a Manger," and "Jazz Gloria." The choir will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble under the direction of Dr. Charlie Steele, minister of music.

The simple Lovefeast service comes from the tradition of the Moravian Church, a Protestant denomination that traces its roots to Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague, early 15th-century reformers and martyrs in Bohemia and Moravia (Czechoslovakia).

Lovefeasts are celebrated to affirm the unity of Christians as brothers and sisters in Christ and are akin to the Agape of the early church. The beeswax candles trimmed with red paper are a reminder that Christ is the light of the world. Lovefeasts have been embraced by many denominations and churches, each adapting it to their own locale.

The public is invited to attend this special service of the season. For more information, contact the church office at (828) 884-2645.
