Navy Lt. Cdr. William "Bill" Robertson experienced cultural shock when he left his duty station on the sands of Waikiki Beach for the sands of Red Beach in Danang, South Vietnam. In 1969 Robertson, a 30-year old engineer in the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion (CB – or Seabees), left behind a wife and three young daughters. As Operations Officer, he would be supervising all construction activities of his 800-man battalion.
