Hiking in the winter is often lonely, but if you know where to look, you begin to see the forest for the trees.
On true winter days like today, where icy winds carve more precious degrees out of already freezing temperatures, we like to stay inside. We bundle up tight, bracing against chilling gusts just to grab the mail or start the car. We dread the never-ending layering, the chapped nose-tips and painfully dry eyes. Dog needs walking? Its rock-paper-scissors between my wife and me, the loser banished to the frost realm.
In the depths of winter the natural world looks rather drab, doesn't it? Gone is the brilliance of fall, the burgeoning of spring not yet in sight. Dark tree trunks and naked...
