Music Trivia Night To Benefit Childhood Cancer Group

January 18, 2018

Think you know music? Well, get a team together, pick out a catchy name and come out for music trivia night on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 6-9 p.m. at Ecusta Brewing Company. The event is a benefit for St. Baldrick’s of Transylvania County.

St. Baldrick’s is a nonprofit organization started in 2001, dedicated to raising money to research childhood cancer treatments and cures — and only childhood cancer. More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease, yet only 4 percent of national cancer research funding is dedicated to childhood cancer. Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes, and one in five will not survive.

Last year St. Baldrick’s bowled to Strike Out Childhood Cancer and raised nearly $4,000; this year the stakes are higher. The organization plans to hold events on the third Thursday of every month, beginning Jan. 18 and culminating on Sept. 22.

Barbara and Alex Ritchey live right here in Pisgah Forest; their middle daughter, Rebecca, is one of those survivors. Diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 12, she is now a Navy wife and a mom.

Michele Izzarone lost her nephew, Cody, to cancer, and she has already formed her team, Cody’s Angels, in his memory.

Sadly, there are several local kids the organization is honoring as well, like Holmes Desmelik, who is currently fighting a brain tumor, and Taffy Galloway’s niece, Sophie Hannah, who is winning her battle — she has been cancer-free for at least 5 years.
