Martin Luther King Jr. Day

In 1994, then-President Bill Clinton signed legislation to designate the federal holiday as a day of service. Since then, both Republican and Democratic presidents have commemorated Martin Luther King Jr.’s life by committing to various service projects. For instance, in 1998 Bill Clinton painted walls at a D.C. high school and in 2001 he painted a senior center alongside AmeriCorps volunteers.
