Rural School Funding Decrease Explained

School Superintendent Jeff McDaris said he received an explanation from U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows’ office as to why Transylvania County is no longer eligible for rural school funding, even though counties with larger populations receive such money.

During the recent Board of Education meeting, McDaris said Transylvania County is now considered to be a part of the Asheville Metropolitan area.

That designation caused the school system to lose approximately $60,000 in federal funding this year.
