The Transylvania Times -

Train Depot Is Great Idea

February 5, 2018

I read the Monday, Jan. 29, opinion by Hayley Putnam, and I respect that Hayley is concerned for many good organizations. Our Mayor (Jimmy Harris) and his children all volunteer at several establishments, most recently at the Bread of Life, where they gave up their Thanksgiving mornings until all who came for a nice meal were fed. Our mayor is one of the most caring individuals I’ve ever known. He supports Sharing House by providing heat for many. He never wants recognition for all that he does to help those more unfortunate than others.

My husband, a fifth-generation resident of Transylvania County, passed away four months ago at the age of 82. Before he went, he would tell of the wonderful train depot in Brevard and all the joy he had in playing there and as he grew older helping whomever needed help with their bags, etc. He loved our depot and I am saddened that he did not live to see that it would be rebuilt on a smaller scale. However, through the donation of a “brick” in Joe Earl Pace’s honor, donated by his favorite great-niece, the depot will be resurrected. That is how our train depot will be built, through donations of the people. It’s the choice of our residents.

This same great-niece also donates to other organizations that provide services for those not able to afford them, and she shops in places like SAFE, Habitat for Humanity, Samuel’s Haven and Goodwill, as do I. Let’s contribute and distribute to all we can, as we can afford, and also bring back our depot which stands for much more than a tourist attraction. It is not “the” priority, but one of many.

Finally, Hayley said in her letter “I am aware that the rebuilding of the train depot would… stimulate the local economy.” That’s a good thing. If our economy is good, more will donate to needy organizations, and all will benefit. Thank you, Hayley, for your letter of opinion, as it gives me an opportunity to state my opinion as well.
