Brevard Police Chief Phil Harris and local performer Blake Anthony Ellege let loose on the dance floor at last year's event.

Make difference and enjoy a night of fabulous food, entertainment and non-stop dancing to Motown hits by attending the second annual Motown Memories fundraiser to benefit Rise & Shine.

Now in its 22 year, Rise & Shine is a local nonprofit afterschool program that offers one-on-one tutoring, along with literacy skills development, for economically disadvantaged and racial minority children from kindergarten through high school. Rise & Shine Scholars also participate in creative science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM) activities.

Focusing on three key messages – "You Matter;" "We Believe in You" and "Dream Big" – Rise & Shine helps students excel academically, learn about their community and culture, and become empowered to work hard and reach high.

Motown Memories is the organization's major fundraising event, with proceeds helping to sustain this vital program, both throughout the academic year and during the summer.

"Last year's Motown gathering proved such a hit with the crowd that we decided to build on that success," said Rise & Shine board member Maureen Copelof.

Once again, along with some top-secret surprise guest entertainment, DJ Marcus Lester will spin the iconic sounds of The Temptations, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson Five and many more. Guests can take to the dance floor, enjoy a delectable supper and bid on items in both live and silent auctions.

When discussing plans for the fundraiser, long-time tutor Carol Miller said, "Motown was such a blast last year! The entertainment, food and positive atmosphere made it a great experience. It felt good to be part of this wonderful, giving community. I can't wait to party again in 2018."

The whole community is invited to this cause! Motown Memories will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Straus Auditorium on the Brevard Music Center campus. Tickets for the event are $65 and are available at Highland Books, Main Street Ltd., and the Rise & Shine office at 290 Oakdale St. in Brevard. Last year's event was a sellout, so be sure to get your tickets soon.

Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in becoming a Motown sponsor may contact the Rise & Shine office at 883-2295.
