February 15, 2018

Kevin Howell was inducted into the Legends of the Fly Hall of Fame at a ceremony held at The Fly Fishing Show in Atlanta, Ga., earlier this month.

The Legends of the Fly Hall of Fame was established in 2017 by Southern Trout Magazine as a way to recognize those individuals in the southern United States that have made significant contributions to the sport of fly fishing.

Nominations for the Hall of Fame took place in October, with voting occurring in November and December. Of the 21 nominees, Howell, who runs Davidson River Outfitters, was one of the six anglers inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“It was an honor to be included with a group of the best anglers and fishermen in the country, many of whom have served as mentors and colleagues through the years,” Howell said.”

Howell’s father, Don R. Howell, was a 2017 inductee.

The Legends of the Fly Hall of Fame is sponsored by Southern Trout Magazine, Sweetwater Brewing Company, The Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians and The Fly Fishing Show. Don Kirk, owner of Southern Trout Magazine and founder of the Hall of Fame, said he founded the Hall of Fame to recognize and preserve the rich history of fly fishing in the Southern United States and Great Smoky Mountains.

Other inductees to the Hall of Fame included Roger Lowe, of Waynesville; Walter Babb of Stillwater, Tenn .; Byron Begley, of Townsend Tenn .; Jim Casada, of Rock Hill, S.C .; and Allen Baker, of Charlotte.

Howell has been the owner of Davidson River Outfitters in Pisgah Forest since 1998.

Howell has also competed in numerous tournaments and events over the years, including winning the 2006 Nation Fly Fishing Masters Championship.

Howell serves as a signature fly designer for Montana Fly Company and is an ambassador for Sage Fly Rods.

He has contributed to several books, magazines and blogs over the years. When asked about his favorite part of the sport, Howell said that introducing others to fly fishing and sharing his knowledge with them is what he enjoys the most.

Howell currently is serving a second term on the N.C. Outdoor Heritage Advisory Council.
