School Board Approves The 2018/2019 Calendar

February 26, 2018

The Transylvania County Board of Education board unanimously approved the school calendar for the 2018-19 school year at a regularly scheduled meeting last Monday evening.

School for students will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

The last day for students will be Thursday, June 6, 2019.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaris said starting school on Wednesday was popular because it helped students, teachers and parents transition back into the school year.

“It makes a huge difference in elementary school,” said board member Alice Wellborn, who is a former school psychologist.

The school system also will keep Jan. 2 as a teacher workday so that families can have that time to travel after New Year’s Day.

McDaris said the most dramatic change from this year’s calendar will be that early release days, days on which students attend school only until noon so that teachers can receive professional development in the afternoon, have been moved from Wednesdays to Fridays.

He said neighboring counties have used Fridays as early release days and found that to be less disruptive than having early release days midweek.

Board member Betty Scruggs McGaha said that in addition to being less disruptive, early release on Friday could benefit parents who want to leave early for a weekend trip.

Brian Weaver, senior director of human resources, said the calendar committee consisted of parents and parents representing elementary, middle and high schools.

He said there were 23 people who attended the first committee meeting.

When asked if the school system would still be able to file for an exemption to start school earlier than established by state law, McDaris said the county would apply for the waiver again.

“We anticipate we will qualify for the waiver again,” said McDaris.

McDaris also said that while schools are physically closed on virtual days, those days still count as school days because they are classified as an off-campus activity.

Other calendar highlights include:

•Thanksgiving break will be from Nov. 22-25.

•Christmas break will begin at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Students will return to school Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019.

•Spring break will be April 15-19, 2019.
