Oh boy, did I feel ashamed. In front of my liberal work peers I told a joke with the “N” word. They just stared at me. As the only Southerner in a group of Midwesterners, I just wanted to go through the floor.

Sure enough, not long afterward our boss convened a racial awareness workshop. I felt singled out; it made no difference that I had marched with Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leader-ship Conference and had joined Fisk University students to protest a curfew in Nashville, Tenn.
