Artist and writer Connie Donaldson will give a presentation on "Freeing Our Creative Selves" at the next AAUW meeting on Tuesday, March 13, at their regular 7 p.m. time at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd across from Ingles. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

This topic represents Donaldson's quintessential view of creativity.

"Many people think we either are creative or we aren't but I believe in creative self-expression for everyone, not just the elite few," she says.

Her passion is helping others discover and reclaim their creative selves.

A recent Florida transplant who was born in southwest Virginia, Donaldson has been delighted to rediscover her mountain roots in a town as culturally rich as Brevard. She is now providing a series of innovative art and writing workshops at the Silvermont Opportunity Center, based on unconventional, liberating and playful techniques.

"We are all innately, naturally creative," she said. "That's what it is to be human and especially to be a woman. We are makers, creators. But we often don't pause in our busy lives to acknowledge and appreciate that fact - or to exercise and develop our innate abilities."

Her art and writing classes reflect these beliefs and are designed around a series of little experiments and explorations in new directions.

Donaldson holds a B.A. in English, a M.S. in library science and a M.A. in counseling psychology, all from Florida universities. With a background of over 25 years as a therapist and facilitator specializing in women's issues and creative development, she began to work on her own art and writing 15 years ago. Her art was featured in two private exhibits in Jacksonville and was shown in several Florida galleries.

She created the popular "Wild Women Weekends" as a way for women to express themselves with ritual, drama, art and writing. She hopes to bring a "Wild Woman Weekend" to the Brevard area and is looking for venues.

"I design experiences based on what I, myself, need in order to flourish and grow," she admits. "Teach what you most need to learn. Works every time!"

She calls her creative ventures "Waterfall Arts."

Her February class called "Freeing the Artist Within" at Silvermont was full. The writing segment, "Writing for Your Life," runs the month of March on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. Call Silvermont at 884-3166 or Connie at (904) 571-6124 or connie.donald to register, if there are still openings available.

AAUW's mission is to promote equity for all women and girls through advocacy, philanthropy, education and research. The primary fundraising activity of the branch is the annual book sale held in June at Brevard College's Boshamer Gym. The yellow book collection boxes are now sprouting up all over town. Look for them and use them when you have no more than one bag or box full of books. For anyone wanting to make a larger book donation, contact Pinkie Byrd at or call (828) 885-8201 to have AAUW members come by and pick up your books or arrange a time for you to drop them off at AAUW's new "Book Nook" facility.

Proceeds from the book sale are used to fund scholarships for Transylvania County girls and young women to attend Brevard College, Blue Ridge Community College, Green River Preserve Camp as well as Clemson University's WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) program. The branch takes great pride in the fact that their book sale is a community-driven operation, with books coming from the community and scholarships going back to the community.

More information about the branch and its many activities is available at Check out the branch's Facebook page: AAUW Brevard NC Branch. For membership information, contact Maury Bandurraga (862-5984) or Leslie Chepenik (877-5721).

The American Association of University Women is open to all graduates who hold a two-year associate degree (or equivalent) or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
