Weighing Tariffs

Earlier this month President Donald Trump, against the advice of numerous economists and former director of the National Economic Council Gary Cohn, signed a proclamation placing a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports. Those tariffs, which exclude Canada and Mexico, go into effect at the end of this week.

One of the main mottos of President Trump’s campaign was “America First,” which included bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. These tariffs can be viewed as fulfilling part of that campaign promise. The president’s goal of reinvig...
