In today’s paper readers can find a column from John Hood about the interest in sheriffs’ races. While the column focuses on why sheriffs’ races gather a great deal of interest, it also states some very disturbing facts, facts that undermine our capacity to have a functional democracy.

As Hood reports, according to recent poll of 625 North Carolina voters done by Elon University, 82 percent of the voters could name our governor, Roy Cooper. Disturbingly, only 62 percent could name Richard Burr and only 56 percent could name Thom Tillis as our U.S. senators.
