Sidney Schwager, 85, of New York, died suddenly April 13, 2018.

Born in Coney Island, N.Y., he lived all of his life in New York, including

the Bronx, Larchmont and Manhattan.

He devoted his career to education, as a teacher, a New York City public school principal and software consultant.

He was an alumnus of Dewitt Clinton High School and City College of New York, where he was a champion swimmer, and, as a Boy Scout, he was a proud member of the Order of the Arrow.

He had fond memories of his Army service at Fort Bliss with a fun, creative group, who remained lifelong friends.

He was a beloved and devoted member of many communities, including Beth Emeth Synagogue, Central Park birders, Sherwood Forest in Brevard, and Flint Park tennis and paddle courts in Larchmont.

An avid birder, he recently added the 668th North American species to his life list.

As suggested by his email address, "goodoldsid" was easygoing, happy and generous. He loved to tell a story, to sing a song, and to select gifts for his children and grandchildren.

He lived fully each of his 85 years and went out as he would have wanted, playing paddle tennis with friends, and playing well.

He dearly loved and is survived by his partner Margaret Thrower MacCary; his children, Dan (Heather), and Julie (Dan); grandchildren, Zoe and Zadie; sister, Carole; brother, Irving; and nephews, Jeff, Gary and Brian.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sherwood Forest Friends, the Southern Poverty Law Center, Meals on Wheels, or the charity of one's choice.

A memorial service will be held at Sherwood Forest at a date to be determined.
