The Brevard High School boys' golf team and tennis team begin their postseason push this week after both squads qualified for the state playoffs in their respective sports. The Blue Devil golf team, which won the Mountain Six Conference tournament last week, took part in the regional tournament on Monday at Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club in Rutherfordton.

It's the first week of May and playoff time is already here for a few teams at Brevard High School.

After locking up Mountain Six Conference championships last week, both the Blue Devil boys' golf and tennis teams begin the postseason this week.

Brevard's golf team wrapped up a conference title and a berth to the regional tournament after finishing as the top team following a shortened two-round conference tournament.

Brevard lost their first conference match of the year against Pisgah at Waynesville Country Club by eight strokes, but still finished 15 strokes ahead of second-place Hendersonville over the two rounds combined.

Ryan Chesna posted the low score for the Blue Devils in the tournament, with a 158.

Will Byrd was one stroke behind with a 159 and Austin Nale rounded out the top six with a 162.

Brevard leads the Mountain Six as one of four teams – along with Pisgah, Franklin and Hendersonville – to qualify for the 2A regional tournament held Monday at Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club, in Rutherfordton.

Representing Brevard are Byrd (No. 1), Nale (No. 2), Chesna (No. 3), Hank Hardesty (No. 4) and Matthew Case (No. 5).

The regional final is a one-day tournament with top qualifying teams moving on to the two-day state championship tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Whispering Pines Country Club.

On the hard court, the Blue Devil tennis team begins its attempt to make a fifth straight trip to the 2A dual team state championship on Wednesday when they take on Owen.

Brevard finished undefeated on the season and won the Mountain Six title last week.

Both the Blue Devils and War Horses are undefeated on the year at 11-0.

Despite both teams having an identical record, Brevard was chosen to host the first-round match, which will take place at 4 p.m.

The winner of that match will advance to round two, scheduled for next Tuesday, May 8.

Also, this Friday and Saturday, will be the individual tennis regionals.

The Brevard tennis team, which also won the Mountain Six Conference tournament, enters the 2A playoffs as an undefeated No. 1 seed and hosts Owen on Wednesday.

Competing individually for Brevard will be Bryce Spradlin, in singles, the doubles teams of Cullen Duval and Aidan Spradlin, and the team of Liam Baer and Charles Kang, also in doubles.

The duo of Baer-Kang was the top doubles team in the Mountain Six, finishing the regular season with a 10-0 record.

Duval and Spradlin finished as the third-ranked doubles team in the conference.

Bryce Spradlin competes individually after finishing the year ranked third among conference singles players.

The individual and doubles state championships will be held next weekend.

Also qualifying locally is Rosman golfer Jonah Whitman.

Whitman will take part in the 1A regional tournament on Tuesday at Linville Golf Club.
