Hog Hyperbole

Recently, in a federal court in eastern North Carolina, a jury unanimously ruled that Murphy-Brown/Smithfield Foods “substantially and unreasonably interfered with the plaintiffs’ use and enjoyment of their property.” The 10 plaintiffs were awarded $50.7 million.

The plaintiffs lived adjacent to or nearby Kinlaw Farms, one of many farms under contracts dictated by Smithfield Foods. Smithfield, the world’s largest producer of pork, is a Chinese-owned company whose contracts stipulate how farmers should raise their hogs.
