Brevard Elementary Excels

May 10, 2018

As the end of the academic year approaches — a year during which I’ve worked as an Augustine tutor at Brevard Elementary School — I would like to give a shout-out to the school for the incredible work they do for the children of this city. I imagine that if my readers are like me, who had never ventured into one of our local public schools, they would have no reason to know the kind of work that goes on in these places or the level of effort and hard work that goes into making them operate, even if only adequately.

But, Brevard Elementary School does not operate adequately. Rather, it excels in many, many ways. It seems almost miraculous that within a few minutes after the children arrive in the morning, every one of them is in his or her classroom, and the teaching-learning process has already begun. Walking down the halls of the building is pure pleasure. Everything is kept impeccably clean and the bulletin boards are always a beautiful sight to behold, mostly featuring the children’s work. Peeping into the classrooms, you are struck by the quality of the atmosphere in which our children spend their school day. The energy of the place is welcoming and kindly, and everyone seems to be happy to be there.

The teachers and teacher aides, as well as the instructional coach, Mrs. Barbara Grimm, who invest so much energy and love into their work with the children, deserve a special recognition, as well as our deepest gratitude.

I don’t think I am the only person in this country who cringes every year when April 15 approaches. Knowing that at least a part of my taxes goes to support schools like Brevard Elementary softens the impact of that alarming day. Actually, I can’t think of a better investment in the future of our city and even our country.
