The Rise Of The Unaffiliated

For the past several years, there has been a trend of ambivalence or disenchantment with the two major political parties. And the trend seems to be gaining some momentum.

Three facts indicate the strengthening of this trend. One is the increase in voters who register as Unafilliated. Decades ago, North Carolina and Transylvania County were strongly Democratic. But as more people moved into the state, the Republican Party gained in numbers and became competitive. For the last several years, Republicans have been the dominant force in county and state government.
