Birders Get An Eyeful During Tour

Frank Porter, Comporium's general manager and a local birder, holds a recorder up to the trees to help identify birds.

At the sound, Michael Plauche paused his group of fellow birders who were on the lookout for the scarlet tanager, a medium-sized American songbird.

For the past few weeks, Transylvania County has been in the middle of one massive migration north of all kinds of birds who spend their winter in Central and South America.

Plauche is a local expert birder who has a fair amount of first sightings this year amongst fellow avian admirers – recently he sighted the first of the yellow breasted chat and Baltimore orioles passing through.
