Earthshine Mountain Lodge

After more than 28 years in business, Earthshine Mountain Lodge has closed. Thirty years ago, Marion Boatwright and Kim Provost conjured the dream that became Earthshine Mountain Lodge on Golden Road in upper Transylvania County, according to a press release.

The creation story alone would go on to become a legend of "never say die" grit and determination, the release said.

Then, in March 1990, the first outdoor education groups made the winding trip up the mountain for programs such as three-day time travel simulations of mountain life in 1840; flying on one of America's first treetop zipline courses; and family vacations, where all gathered eggs for breakfast and joined in making buttermilk biscuits.

"Earthshine has blown minds - including ours - for 30 years," said Provost. "But now this amazing mountain is ready for a new dream. We're sure that as word gets out it's for sale, new dreamers will jump at the opportunity. They just aren't making mountain tops like this anymore."

A farewell party is also planned.

"Earthshine has been a part of so many people's lives," Boatwright said. "And not just here in Transylvania County. Schools have been sending groups from all across the Carolinas - especially Greenville, Pickens and Oconee counties - for 30 years. Tens of thousands of kids have had the Earthshine experience, and I bet you not a single one has forgotten it. So, the public at large is invited June 10."

The Earthshine Farewell Open House will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday. Refreshments and live mountain music will be on tap. Earthshine is located at 1600 Golden Road in Lake Toxaway. For more information, call Boatwright at (828) 553-6959.
