The Transylvania Times -

Bag Lunch Arts Series To Continue In June With 'Faces Of Appalachia'

June 11, 2018

The 2018 Bag Lunch Arts Series continues in June with “Faces of Appalachia,” which will be presented by photographer and author Tim Barnwell.

The program begins at noon on Tuesday, June 19, in the library’s Rogow Room and is made possible by the Friends of the Library.

Barnwell will discuss Appalachian culture and history as it relates to the area, sharing photographs and stories of meeting folks from Western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

The presentation will include images of people and places made over the past 35 years that are included in his three Appalachian-themed books that include scenes of daily life, such as farming, hunting, religious activities, people working with oxen and horses, making traditional crafts and playing old-time music.

Transcending their geographical origins, his photographs record a way of life and remind us how our forefathers lived for generations, with seemingly little change, in the decades before modern industry, roads, technology, and communications transformed the country. His presentation will focus on his efforts, using photography and collecting oral histories, to preserve regional mountain heritage and promote appreciation of the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Barnwell is a based in Asheville and is one of the most published photographers in the South. His books include “The Face of Appalachia” and “On Earth’s Furrowed Brow,” which capture farm culture, while “Hands in Harmony” spotlights the craftspeople and musicians who play all manner of traditional instruments, including Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Jerry Douglas and Pete Seeger. His books will be available for sale and signing following the program.

Proceeds from Friends’ memberships and from Second Story Book Store sales help pay for all of the library programming.

There is never a charge to attend programs, and the public is invited to bring along a bag lunch to enjoy during this presentation. Refreshments for Bag Lunch are provided by the Friends and include cookies and coffee from Blue Ridge Bakery. For more information, call the library at 884-3151.
