Military Museum Hosts D-Day, Other WWII Veterans

June 11, 2018

About 120 people gathered in the WNC Military History Museum on June 6 to commemorate the turning point of World War II and to honor two D-Day veterans and seven other World War II veterans.

D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944, when the Allies invaded western Europe.

Ray Pegram, a radio operator in the first C-47 to drop Pathfinder paratroops into Normandy at 1a.m. on D-Day, told of his experiences and showed slides. Pegram’s plane also dropped glider planes and supplies, and, later, landed on Utah Beach when the tide was out, picking up wounded soldiers and flying them back to England.
