Not All Milkweed Spreads

Allow me to discuss milkweed in our gardens a bit more. Common milkweed, Asclepias syricaca, does spread by rhizomes and needs space to do that. It is drought tolerant, and the blooms are pinkish and have a lovely fragrance reminiscent of lilacs. When folks come to thin my home garden plot, I show them the effect of spreading and how to deal with it. It is in many small home gardens in Brevard. One in particular has produced over 30 Monarch butterfly caterpillars this spring.
