Sharing House volunteer Barb Harrah stocks the pantry shelves with food donated by Food Lion, a special friend to Sharing House. Each year, the company gives thousands of pounds of fresh meat, produce and bakery goods to the pantry.

Sharing House received $2,700 to provide food for hungry Transylvanians from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation.

Executive Director Rev. Shelly Webb said the gift will be used to purchase food for the pantry and to help fund Sharing House's extensive nutrition education programs.

Sharing House provides essentials of living for about 2,700 Transylvania families in need. Services range from food to clothing to occasional help with rent and overdue utilities. It also provides life-skills training with its "Getting Ahead" program, which is designed to help participants break out of poverty.

In a typical month Sharing House provides up to 13,000 meals to hungry Transylvania families. Last year it dispensed 137,535 meals.

"Food Lion is a special friend of Sharing House," said Webb.

In addition to about 1,500 pounds every week of fresh meat, produce and bakery items from the local College Plaza store, the corporation often makes annual cash gifts like this one.

"Last November the home office sent two dozen volunteers to help us set up our Great Pantry Makeover, a new 'shopper friendly' pantry. They came with a truck packed with more than a ton of canned and dry goods," she added.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $10 million in grants. For more information, visit http://www.foodlion.com/feeds.
