Rice Street Garden Welcomes Back Pack Campers

Ellen Dozier, a volunteer from The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, is helping the children pull "volunteer" cherry tomato plants from a bed of romaine lettuce.

"Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow." First they sang the famous "Garden Song" by John Denver, and, then, on June 19, they went to the Rice Street Community Garden and pulled weeds and picked stones. Singing it and then doing it.

The third day of the week-long Back Pack Camp was Garden Day, and 31 children listened enthralled as they toured Rice Street Garden with Bill Chandler, one of the members of the garden's steering committee. Then, he put them to work pulling weeds and picking stones.
