Losing International Respect

As we look back upon the recent July 4 celebrations, we should reflect upon our Declaration of Independence. In calling for separation from Great Britain, our founding fathers did not argue that we should defer to other countries on all matters, but in the opening paragraph of that document, they emphasized the importance of “a decent respect to the opinions of mankind…”

Over the next 200 years, the economic role of the U.S. in world affairs increased dramatically even as we generally refused to involve ourselves in international alliances and political affairs, but that isolation...
