Brevard Resident Will Discuss Battle Of Iwo Jima

On Wednesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at the WNC Military History Museum, Brevard resident Frank Hawkins will discuss the 1945 battle of Iwo Jima, which was one of the deadliest and most memorable battles in the Pacific during WWII. It was the only battle in the Pacific in WWII in which there were more U.S. Marine casualties than Japanese.

Despite the high cost of American lives, the capture of Iwo Jima was strategically critical for both the Americans as well as the Japanese, who regarded the small island as part of mainland Japan.
