Saturday Night Was Magical

On Saturday night, July 14, the Brevard Music Center’s superb orchestra accompanied the movie “West Side Story” as the film was shown on three large screens to an enthusiastic sell-out crowd. To the audience, the precise synchronizing of music to film was brilliant, really quite astonishing. The whole event had a magical feel to it.

Composed by Leonard Bernstein (music), Steven Sondheim (lyrics), and Jerome Robbins (choreography), the film and the musicians transported the thousands of us who shared it to the streets of New York’s West Side in the late 1950s to bear witness to...
