Conserving Carolina: Gwynn Valley To Host Conservation Celebration

August 6, 2018

On Saturday, Aug. 18, Conserving Carolina will be hosting its 18th Conservation Celebration. An annual ticketed event, the Conservation Celebration is the organizations largest benefit, featuring a preevent hike, live music by Crooked Pine Band, live and silent auctions, a gourmet dinner by Good Life Catering Co. and cash bar, with fine wine and local beer. This year, the celebration will be held at Gwynn Valley Camp.

Founded in 1935 and located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Gwynn Valley Camp is a sustainably run summer camp, with a farm-to-table philosophy and a focus on acceptance, simplicity, an appreciation of the natural world and maintaining a non-competitive program. With a working farm located on the 400-acre property, Gwynn Valley aims to teach children, where their food is coming from and how their food is created. The working farm creates approximately 60 to 70 percent of the camp's food and an 1890's grist mill takes farm-raised corn and produces grits, cornmeal and chicken feed.

In 1995, 300 acres of the property were conserved by Pacolet Area Conservancy by former owners Howie and Betty Boyd, and, after the merger of Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and Pacolet Area Conservancy in 2017, this land is currently held in easement by Conserving Carolina. Current owners and directors Grant and Anne Bullard uphold that commitment to conservation and are dedicated to preserving the land for future generations.

With this amazing history of environmental sustainability, Gwynn Valley Camp is a perfect location for the Conservation Celebration, an event celebrating Conserving Carolina's accomplishments protecting and promoting natural lands, clean air and drinking water, and connecting people to the land through environmental education and public recreation. Without partners and all of their support, this work would not be possible. A special thanks is extended to Hunter Subaru and Beverly-Hanks & Associates for sponsoring the 2018 Conservation Celebration. Lastly, an extra special thanks to Anne and Grant Bullard, the owners and directors of Gwynn Valley Camp for hosting the 2018 celebration.
