Frederick Eugene "Gene" McCrary

Brevard loses a native son, Frederick Eugene McCrary, better known as Gene, and by his co-workers as "Mop."

Born in Brevard July 5, 1938, to Ellison Kay and Lula Heath McCrary, he was raised in a two bedroom cabin with his parents and three brothers, Jack, Kay, and John Allen, and five sisters, Eileen Summey, Louella Merrill, Helen Channel, Thalia Queen and twin sister, Joanne Black.

After graduating from Brevard High School, he went to work at Ecusta in the pulp mill, and then in maintenance. He retired two months short of 45 years.

He served as a deacon at Carr's Hill Baptist Church....
