Bipartisan Opposition

An extraordinary event happened Monday. North Carolina’s five former governors – two Republicans and three Democrats – joined forces to publicly announce their opposition to two proposed constitutional amendments.

“The legislature should be making laws, not running the government,” former Gov. Jim Martin, a Republican, told the Charlotte Observer earlier this summer. “You have to defeat (the amendment). You have to kill a snake at every opportunity.”

“It’s a blatant power grab from the executive branch,” said former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory.
