The United States' National POW/MIA Recognition Day will be observed across the nation on Friday, Sept. 21.

Transylvania County residents are encouraged to take time to honor and remember the sacrifices and service of those Americans who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are still missing in action (MIA), and their families.

According to the Congressional Research Service, 725 Americans were POWs during the Vietnam War (1961-1973). Of that group, 661 returned to U.S. military control and 64 died while prisoners of war. In military actions since that time, another 37 Americans have...
