The Transylvania Times -

Dottie Tinsley To Offer Clogging Classes At Silvermont - Brevard NC

September 24, 2018

Dottie Tinsley

Dottie Tinsley, veteran clog dancer, will again teach traditional mountain clogging classes at Silvermont beginning Tuesday, Oct. 9. There will be six one-hour sessions. The classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning on Oct. 9 and ending on Oct. 25. Starting time is 11:15. A fee of $60 is charged.

Tinsley began teaching clogging in the 1990s at Brevard College. She later taught at the Jim Bob Tinsley Museum and the Heritage Museum. In 2015 she started teaching clogging at Silvermont and has continued there each fall and spring.

For many years, after she and her late husband retired from careers in education, Dottie traveled with Jim Bob throughout the Western states where he performed in concerts and conducted seminars. Dottie was always asked to clog dance at those concerts. She says it was a real thrill to dance at such venues as the Gene Autry Museum, the Roy Rogers Museum, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo., as well as other interesting events in the West and in Florida.

At the first Florida Folk Festival in 1952, "Cousin Thelma" introduced Dottie as the first clog dancer to perform at the festival. Jim Bob also performed, playing guitar and singing cowboy songs. He also took part in a seminar about the early cattle industry in Florida and told stories of Florida cowboys. Dottie and Jim Bob were students at the University of Florida.
