Ten years ago this month, the housing market collapsed, the financial markets plunged and the Great Recession began. The situation was so dire that then presidential candidates and U.S. senators John McCain and Barack Obama briefly suspended their campaigns to return to Washington. D.C., in order to pass bipartisan legislation that would temporarily keep the economy afloat.
