Powell Saved Sibelius Concerto

On Sunday, Oct. 7, the Brevard Philharmonic opens its new season, featuring the Violin Concerto in D Minor by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Today, it stands as one of the most popular and recorded 20th century violin concertos, but were it not for the American violinist Maud Powell (1867-1920), it might well have sunk into obscurity.

Sibelius completed his first version in 1904. After its unsuccessful premiere, he revised it 1905 in the form we know it today. Richard Strauss conducted the premiere later that year in Berlin. The reception was mixed: “terrible and boring;” “…a pol...
