Most Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) that process recycling collected in single stream collection programs are a complex maze of conveyor belts, manual sorters, optical sorters and holding bins. This is what is necessary to separate large volumes of materials by type for sale in the open market.

Welcome back to our third story in a series exploring waste and material management in Transylvania County. This week, we'll look at recycling as an industry, how and why materials are collected for recycling, and the economics of recycling in Transylvania County.
