Mountain Skies: The Arch Of Planets Begins To Disappear

The Planets

Throughout the summer we have had an arch or bridge in the early evening formed in the south by all five of the naked-eye planets (although a maximum of four at a time). As the nights have progressed, this parade of planets has been moving westward each night as we orbit our central star and our perspective from the Earth has changed. By the end of June, the elusive Mercury, which had been anchoring the western end of this arch, disappeared into the evening twilight soon replaced by the brilliant orange specter of Mars rising in the southeast.
