Forum On State Constitutional Amendments Set For Oct. 16

October 8, 2018

A forum on the proposed amendments to the N.C. Constitution will be held on Tues, Oct. 16, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 22 Fisher Road in Brevard. The evening, which will begin with a spaghetti supper, is being sponsored by Transylvania’s NAACP.

Jen Jones, director of communications and digital strategy for Democracy NC, a non-partisan organization, is the featured presenter.

Jones will discuss the six amendments proposed by the N.C. Legislature for voter ratification this fall. She will explain why Democracy NC is urging North Carolinians to vote against all six, according to a press release. Jones will explain that two are simply unnecessary, the release said, and are intended to confuse voters; two are partisan attempts to pack courts, boards and committees and diminish the separation of powers; and two are assaults on the poorest and most marginalized people in the state, often African-Americans.

Along with North Carolina’s NAACP and ACLU, the release said, all five of North Carolina’s living former governors (Democrats and Republicans), and all six of the states’ former chief justices of the Superior Court (Republicans and Democrats) have indicated their opposition to the proposed amendments, which former Gov. Pat McCrory has called “an effort to hijack our constitution.” Jones will tell why opposition to the six amendments is strong and growing, the release said.
