Silvermont's Pumpkin Fest Opens Friday

October 11, 2018

Pumpkins come out from everywhere. Be careful.

The time has arrived when the Friends of Silvermont and hundreds of Pumpkin Fest volunteers can marvel with pride at seeing children of all ages shriek, laugh and go, "Ooooooh!" Friday, Oct. 12, from 7-9 p.m. Pumpkin Fest goes live. Pumpkin Fest will be open for three Friday-Saturday weekends at Silvermont: Oct. 12-13, 19-20, and 26-27.

Preparations are in their final stage with the lighting of all the displays and testing the electrical hook-ups. Actually, the pumpkins started rolling in Oct. 1, designated "Move-in Day." Since then volunteers have been hard at work every day assembling all the parts of the many set designs: "Under the Sea," "Pirates' Cove," "Butterfly Garden," and "Ghost Circle Dance" to name a few.

Opening day is when the human component shows up to show off for all the kids and the kid in all of us. This is Transylvania County, after all. Prepare to see ghosts and fairies fluttering around, plus white squirrels in many sizes. Community actors in costume do their part to entertain and keep the magic alive.

Other entertainment abounds with live, local musicians performing nightly. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt, trying to find small, wooden white squirrels hidden along the path. They can enjoy story-telling, a photo opportunity with the white squirrel, coloring pumpkins and other outdoor games.

Don't forget the food, either. There will be food trucks and other refreshments available.

Pumpkin Fest exists for a good cause – raising funds to support, maintain and renovate Silvermont mansion, a Brevard historic treasure. The 100-year old Silvermont mansion will also be open during Pumpkin Fest with docents to share the history of Silvermont and for the public to see the recently refurbished first floor of the mansion. The proceeds from Pumpkin Fest will continue to provide the funding necessary to preserve the historic heritage of Brevard.

If you can, bring your own flashlight to make your experience come alive. The cost is $5 per person.
